Kibale National Park lies in western Uganda and covers about 795 km². It is one of Africa’s key primate sanctuaries and is especially famous for its chimpanzees. More than 1,500 of these intelligent animals live here in habituated groups that visitors can observe on guided treks.

The park ranges in elevation from 1,100 to 1,600 metres and is predominantly evergreen rainforest. It also includes swamps, grasslands and crater lakes, creating a varied landscape. In addition to chimpanzees, Kibale is home to a total of 13 primate species, including L’Hoest’s monkeys, red colobus monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

Kibale is also a paradise for bird lovers, with over 370 recorded species, including the green-breasted pitta, one of East Africa’s most sought-after sightings. The area is renowned for nature walks, birdwatching, and cultural encounters with the surrounding communities.

Animals in Kibale National Park

Kibale is famous for its chimpanzees, often seen moving in large groups through the treetops. Besides these apes, 12 other primate species live here, including red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Forest elephants, bushbucks, and various small antelopes also inhabit the park.

Over 370 bird species have been recorded in Kibale, including the rare green-breasted pitta, hornbills, and many species of trogons and turacos. The park’s swamps are also home to numerous amphibians and colourful butterflies.
