Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers an area of around 321 km² in southwestern Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The region is a remnant of the ancient Afro-tropical rainforest that once covered large parts of Africa before the last Ice Age.

The park lies at altitudes between 1,160 and 2,607 metres and impresses with steep hillsides, dense ferns, moss-covered trees, and countless streams. More than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas live here, making Bwindi the most important refuge for this rare species. In addition to gorillas, the park is home to over 120 species of mammals, including forest elephants, various monkeys, and numerous small mammals.

With more than 350 bird species and about 200 butterfly species, Bwindi is also a biodiversity hotspot. The park is renowned for gorilla trekking but also offers nature walks, birdwatching, and cultural encounters with local communities.

Animals in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The star of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the mountain gorilla. Over 460 of these rare animals live here in more than 20 habituated groups. But the park offers even more: forest elephants roam the valleys, while blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys swing through the treetops. Less commonly seen are bushbucks or giant forest hogs.

With over 350 bird species, Bwindi is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Especially notable are the African green broadbill, regal sunbird, and the African emerald cuckoo. Many Albertine Rift endemic species can also be found here.
